http://www.ready4sleep.com/

When I was doing my PhD, publishing papers was never really my goal…

There is definitely generation(???) gap between us. LOL!

    • RandomCoil Says:

Let me just add, my publication record was/is indeed very poor… but I did have a lot of fun!

      • Justin Says:

i think it is the difference between different subjects.

CS has a tendency to publish lots of papers.

I have heard that ppl in math dun need to publish a single paper to get a phd.

while here in CS, most people have published before joining the phd program. we even suspect that a clean-sheet-applicant won’t be considered.

  2. MIT Says:

cheer up!I am sure you will figure out sth one day, this is just the preparation period for that moment.
Atually I want to know what exactly do you study ?software or formula ?is it about Optimization ?what kind of Optimization ?what result you want to see ?what kind of problem you want to solve?

    • Justin Says:

We try to solve optimization problem. Like minimizing the cost when deploying a network while all bandwidth demands are satisfied, minimizing the traveling time of a UPS vehicle while all goods are delivered on time…..

  5. Echo Says:

I am not sure if I can understand your idea, but this is so interesting to me.
When I read this article first, I had different interpretation on optimization.
The first question come up to my mind was ‘what are the relationship between utilization, maximization and balancing?I interpret Optimization =consistantly better.let use life as an example. when I was young ,I also want to be the 1st in the class, but then I realize I can be the first in short run ,but not in Long run.So I change my mind,I want to be happy, and if I could keep consistantly feeling happy, I will achieve my own optimization. So what matter most to me, is the balancing skill, and I don’t need to worry about being replace someday.
Is it’s possible to develop a software/application than can generate invisble outcome ?like can we use an software to visualize our utility or happiness instead of quantitative outcome ?

    • Justin Says:

      interesting~~

first, computer is dumb, it is just a machine and has no intelligence at all.

so, i dun believe in the near future that computer can do anything more than some quantitative reasoning.

Back to optimization, the most important thing to specify is the objective function. This problem is already difficult enough for most computer scientist. Some people are also investigating multi-objective optimization, probably sth related to balancing like what you have mentioned.

In my research, I work in some problem that is so constrained that very often it doesn’t even have a feasible solution that satisfies all restriction.

  7. Justin Says:

  9. Echo Says:

so you are writing article instead of code ? Or both?
Actually I found I am bad in describing my idea. What I was trying ask is Can I sell some experience through software? I got this inspiration from Swedish design; all the products & services should be value creation. Value creation(=pleasure, happiness) can be achieved by improving the positive impact from one or many human nature, or lower the negative impact from one or many nature and other things being equal.
For example ,missing someone you love is a human nature/emotion, you cannot eliminate it, but you can lower the negative feeling from missing by invent SKYPE, and as long as’ ‘ missing’ emotion existed in this world, you don’t have to worry about the market, however you cannot be the richest one, as people will follow you.
I think it’s the same idea as making someone better off without making someone else worse off. It just they replace someone by impact from human nature. if you image one human nature as a pie, red is good impact, and black is bad impact, the design concept is trying to lower the black power.

  10. Justin Says:

Both. Usually I first write code, when I get good results, I write a paper to explain what I have done.

“Can we make a better world through software??" <- is this the question you are asking?

For me, the answer is definitely yes!

  11. Echo Says:

No exactly:P. To me, software is just a tool; it could be good or bad. And even it’s a good one, it could have long term impact or short term impact.
From a business student’s perspective, there are 2 roles in IT industry, one is innovator, one is problem solver.
    Bill Gate is a problem solver, he develop office and solve some office issue by consistently introduce new versions to the market. But then Open office enter the market, with cheaper cost & similar product, so Microsoft start wondering(or worrying) one day they may lost ‘Office’ Market;
Steve Jobs is an innovator, Apple may have their own software and products, look like what Microsoft is doing. However, Apple is actually selling an experience, to feel being unique and high class, or you could say they are targeting vanity this human nature. Steve Jobs doesn’t have to worry about replacing issue, but he has copycat problem.
I have a feeling that sometimes you want to be an innovator, but something your think you are problem solver, that’s why you are so stressed. Maybe you could try to be Steve Jobs, to identify what kind of human natures are associated with Optimization.

  12. Justin Says:

haha, I am pretty sure that I am more of a problem solver than an innovator. Although seems like people admire innovator more! maybe that’s why I want also to be an innovator.
